California Air Resources Board (CARB) gets approval for new truck NOx emissions options and federal greenhouse gas emission standards

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) received approval from the Californian Office of Administrative Law to offer truck owners several optional emission standards when purchasing new trucks and engines.

The new standards include 0.1 g/hp-hr, 0.05 g/hp-hr and 0.02 g/hp-hr NOx emission limits and are part of CARB's ongoing plan to persuade truck owners to purchase trucks that operate at lower-than required NOx levels. According to CARB: "Such optional standards allow local districts and ARB to preferentially provide incentive funding to the purchaser of cleaner trucks, which encourages the development of cleaner engines."

In a similar development, the state office for Administrative Law approved new regulations for greenhouse gas emissions from medium and heavy-duty diesel engines. This approval enforces federal greenhouse gas emission standards in California outdating the previous CARB standards. CARB already had approved this switch to federal legislation in December 2013 which has now been formally approved by the State of California.
