Saskatchewan starts recycling scheme for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) containers

Rebecca Hayward - 10 January 2014

The Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery Corp. (SARRC) has increased the number of petroleum products eligible for recycling under new regulations that came into effect on January 1, 2014.

The list of products has been extended to include the recycling of used antifreeze as well as plastic antifreeze and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) containers.

"The expanded recycling program is important for the environment as well as our quality of life", said Environment Minister, Ken Cheveldayoff. "Used antifreeze is toxic and contains heavy metals. Under this program, there is the potential to recycle over three million litres of these hazardous materials each year which can help extend the life of Saskatchewan landfills," he added.

To fund the program, SARRC's members plan to add an Environmental Handling Charge (EHC) to the price of antifreeze, antifreeze containers (up to 50 litres) and DEF containers (up to 50 litres), effective April 1, 2014.
