John Deere has announced its Tier 4 Final emissions strategy for off-highway diesel engines will utilize Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), exhaust filters and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), which requires Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), to reduce emissions.
A statement said the use of EGR would allow the new engines to utilize less DEF than Interim Tier 4 models seen in the market, leading to a reduction in DEF storage tank size. Overall fluid economy, a measure of both diesel and DEF use, would "meet or improve upon the current total fluid economy of our Interim Tier 4 models," according to the company's website.
John Piasecki, Director of Worldwide Marketing, Sales and Customer Support for John Deere Power Systems, said: "At John Deere, we continue to offer the right combination of technologies at the right time to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations and customer needs."
"Exhaustive research and testing determined that an application-specific SCR system that is well integrated with our proven Interim Tier 4 engine platform, will be the best solution to achieve Final Tier 4 emissions compliance while delivering the power, performance, ease of operation, fluid efficiency, reliability and economical operating cost that our customers expect from John Deere."
The engines will be compatible with traditional ultra-low-sulfur diesel as well as biodiesel 5 to 20% (B5-B20).
Caterpillar, Cummins and New Holland had previously announced SCR would be used to meet Tier 4 Final emissions regulations.
The Environmental Protection Agency's Tier 4 Final emissions standards will apply to off-road vehicles from 2014, reducing particulate matter emissions to 0.02 g/kW-hr and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to 0.40 g/kW-hr.
