Orono Spectral Solutions develops a solventless oil contaminant analyzer for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)

Rebecca Hayward - 24 April 2014

Maine-based Orono Spectral Solutions (OSS) has announced that its new oil detection system for urea liquor or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is available for purchase.

The oil contaminant analyzer has been developed in response to the sensitivity of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to chemical impurities. High-purity urea and deionized water used in DEF must be contaminant-free to prevent damage to the SCR system.

OSS's oil contaminant analyzer is a filtering system that can isolate, measure, and characterize hydrocarbons in DEF in the range of 0-40mg/L, with a detection limit of 0.25 ppm.  The oil can be analyzed using any commercially available Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), which identifies the infrared signature of oils and in doing so, may also provide an indication of its source. This can be used during production of DEF and along the manufacturing and supply chain.

OSS has said the system enables analysis to be undertaken on site in less than 10 minutes and a single operator can process more than 30 samples per hour. Furthermore, it benefits from being solventless which means a fume hood is not needed.

Dean Smith, Vice President for Engineering, OSS has told discoverDEF, "OSS is proud to offer this inexpensive, fast, green, and easy to use quality assurance technology to help manufacturers and supply chain personnel provide the best DEF product possible to customers who are reliant on the effectiveness, durability, and uncompromised performance of their SCR systems."
