IFFCO Canada has announced that the Goverment of Quebec has authorized the company to move ahead with plans to build a nitrogen plant in Bécancour, QC.
The new production facility is expected to have annual production capacity of between 1.3 and 1.6 million tonnes of granular urea for the fertilizer market, and 760,000 tonnes of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The project is expected to cost US $1.6 billion and is scheduled for completion in 2017.
The site in Quebec is located in Bécancour Port and Industrial Park which is served by land, rail and water infrastructure networks, and the company intends to serve North American markets as well as considering the potential to export to international markets.
"Our focus now is on project financing which, once finalized, will pave the way for construction of the industrial complex to commence. That said, work on the project continues to progress, the business environment remains favourable, and we are confident that the plant will be ready for commissioning in 2017", said Manish Gupta, Chief Executive Office, IFFCO Canada.
The project was formed in 2012 through the partnership of two agricultural cooperatives, IFFCO and La Coop Fédérée. La Coop Fédérée has agreed to purchase 500,000 tonnes of urea annually for distribution across the organisation's extensive network.
