Canadian Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) network increased by over 60% between April and August 2013

Lucy Terry - 16 September 2013

In the last four months the Canadian DEF pump network expanded by 12 locations, or 63%. The country now has 31 locations offering DEF at the fuel island, compared to 19 in April 2013.

While this remains a small network in comparison to the U.S., with 1,103 pumps, Canada's network has expanded at a fast pace in recent months. The August edition of DEF Tracker reported 16 new North American locations offering DEF at the pump, of which half were located in Canadian provinces.

Many of the recent additions to the Canadian network are Petro-Pass truck stops operated by the company Petro-Canada. Following general trends, these truck stops charge CAD$ 0.799/L (US$ 2.91/G) for DEF. Unlike most of the first 20 Canadian locations offering DEF at the pump, many are located a considerable distance from the U.S. border - suggesting that the market for bulk DEF in Canada is expanding beyond populous Southern cities and towns.

Both Pilot Flying J and Petro-Canada operate over one-third of the Canadian pump network each. Of all the provinces, Ontario has the largest number of pumps at the fuel island, with 12 equipped locations.
