Navistar submits new engine type for EPA certification

Navistar International is continuing to pursue its Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) strategy, following the news that it is running out of emissions credits. Automotive World reports that Navistar has submitted a 12.4 litre MaxxForce 13 engine for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification. The engine was built under license from MAN in Germany.

Navistar says it is confident that the latest version of the engine will meet requirements, even without Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology - which is used by Navistar's competitors Volvo and Cummins. If the MaxxForce 13 does not meet requirements, Navistar faces fines of $1900 for each non-compliant engine it supplies after February 29.

The company has joined forces with Clean Energy Fuels Corp to promote the use of natural gas as a heavy-duty truck fuel. The natural gas engines installed in Navistar vehicles are from Cummins-Westport, re-establishing a relationship between the two companies. Navistar adopted an EGR strategy to meet emissions targets and criticised SCR technology adopted by Cummins and other manufacturers.
