UPDATE: EPA document highlights importance of low DEF warning systems

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) draft on-highway Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) certification guidance has made recommendations to manufacturers of SCR systems to include on board diagnostics-based, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) warning systems.

The report, published on June 7, 2011, places emphasis on the importance of equipping SCR technology with warning systems and automatic shut-down / limp mode features to discourage drivers from not refuelling DEF. The document said that engine manufacturers must ensure that vehicles cannot be operated without adequate DEF for long periods of time. The EPA advice is that warning systems should include both visual and audible alarms, and only be disarmed once the DEF tank has been replenished.
