Pump Info
SCR systems are sensitive to impurities in Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), and the use of incorrect pumping and handling equipment can cause catalyst or DEF injector failures that are very expensive to repair and result in lost time for the vehicle.
DEF is corrosive to certain materials such as carbon steel, aluminium and certain plastics. Internal wear can be caused by the formation and build up of abrasive urea crystals if air is able to enter or gets trapped in the pumping unit. DEF also contains de-ionized water, which can draw ions from surfaces it comes into contact with if incorrect materials are used.
ISO 22241 lists a number of materials which are suitable for pumps and handling, however, the standard makes it clear that the list is not exhaustive.
DEF pumps can be both pneumatic (hand pumped) and electric. Electric barrel and tote pumps can cost between $500 and $1000 depending on the features included, including flow rate (measured in gallons), mounting, whether or not the pump is self priming, and automatic shut-off of the motor. A good quality tote pump should last more than a year and empty many totes.
A self-priming pump automatically clears the system of air on first use, removing the need for a user to do this process manually with a foot valve, vacuum or ejector pump. Fluid is retained in the pump casing to facilitate this feature.
Pneumatic pumps can be used for barrels and even jugs, and cost significantly less than their electric counterparts, usually in the range of $150 to $250.
Where a flow meter is included on the pump and the pump will be used to bill a customer at a retail location then the system should be Weights and Measures approved, indicating it has been tested to ensure accuracy.

Dispensing Nozzles
The same care taken in selecting and operating pumping equipment needs to be given to dispensing nozzles and hoses. Even though the equipment is only in contact with DEF for a short periods of time, it can be subject to similar corrosion and contamination issues.
The most common material used in the fabrication of the DEF nozzles is stainless steel or nickel plated aluminum, with high-density plastic used for unit handles. It is worth noting that long-term exposure to nickel can cause contamination, however, in this instance the risk is minimal.
In some cases nozzles include a magnetic lock system which correspond with magnets in an inlet adaptor in the filler neck of the vehicle's DEF tank, permitting flow when contact is made. The inlet adaptor dimensions and design are defined in ISO 22241. This is a safety feature which prevents DEF from being dispensed into the diesel tank.
